On last Friday, Deputy Sheriff Carson took a trip out to the Peters Home place, about 6 miles from town, to arrest a negro man named Manuel Smith, for whom he had a requisition from Gov. Lowry, of Mississippi, on the charge of horse stealing, in Tunica County, in that State. Manuel defied the law and the officer, resisting arrest, and swearing he would not be taken alive. Mr. C. found it necessary to put a small bit of lead in his leg, not breaking the bone, however, whereupon he surrendered at once, was brought to town and quartered in jail. On Tuesday morning, Sheriff J. W. Johnson, of Tunica, got here, and conveyed his prisoner thither for trial.—Florence Gazette.
