Austin Is the Marshal
WASHINGTON, July 19. Charles C. Austin of Decatur, was appointed Marshal of the North Alabama District to-day.
He is a native of the state, and now holds the office of Mayor of Decatur, and is an active and uncompromising Republican.
This was predicted early this morning, when the news got abroad that Judge Bruce had withdrawn his support from Hardy and endorsed Austin’s appointment, created a great stir in the camps of Alabamians, though by the majority it is considered to be a good appointment
Austin is an old time, straight-out Republican, and not a representative of a white league or any particular faction. The other candidates are, of course, disappointed, but take the matter philosophically, and are preparing to go home.
Dick Austin, who has been here making the fight for his brother is the happiest man alive.
